Narayanganj District is a district of Dhaka Division in central Bangladesh . The administrative headquarters of this district is located in Narayanganj city. The very ancient and famous Sonargaon belongs to this district. Narayanganj is known as the Dandy of the East for its golden fiber jute. Narayanganj river port is a famous river port located on the banks of Shitalakshya river.This district with an area of 683.14 square kilometers is the smallest district of Dhaka Division. The district has a border with the capital Dhaka. Narayanganj district is located southeast of the capital Dhaka, between 23°33' to 23°57' north latitude and 90°26' to 90°45' east longitude. Its district is Narsingdi district in the north , Gazipur district and Munshiganj district in the south , Brahmanbaria district and Comilla district in the east , Dhaka in the west . The total area of Narayanganj district is 684.35 square kilometers. Its average height above sea level is 13 meters or 32 feet.Topographically, the district is an alluvial plain of the Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna basin. The annual average rainfall of the district is 1777 mm.
